Mick Deaver was a young hockey player from Columbia, Missouri who was chasing his dreams of playing the game at the highest level he could. At a very young age Mick began playing hockey in Jefferson City Missouri which is where the nearest rink was located 30 miles away from his home in Columbia. As he continued to develop his skills, the draw for more and better competition began to lure his desire to play at levels higher levels. After participating in the USA Hockey National Championship tournament, he was approached by an organization in Massachusetts. The Boston Bandits wanted Mick to come and play for their Club.  After much family discussion, it was decided  that Mick should continue to chase his dreams of playing hockey. At the age of 15, Mick moved from his home in Columbia, Missouri to Bridgewater, Massachusetts which was 1,300 miles away from his family and friends. He played his first year with the Bandits 16U team and the following year made the jump to the Junior team. In his third season with the Bandits he was made the Captain of the team.

On November 18, 2016 Mick’s dream of playing hockey came to a crashing end. As Mick gained the puck in his own end, he began skating up ice when he suddenly lost his balance and collided with a player from the other team. It was a collision that has happened thousands of times but this one was the one in a million that changed Mick, his family and all that know him forever. The resulting collision left Mick with a burst fracture of the C5 vertebrae and a quadriplegic. Mick and his father remained in New Jersey were Mick began his long road of recovery and adjusting to a new way of life. The Deaver family was deeply touched by the outpouring of support from not only the hockey community but also those that touched their lives.

The BeStrong29 Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 organization, was started to help and focus on supporting individuals, particularly youth, with permanent, but not limited to, spinal cord injuries and disabilities through grants, scholarships, research, and other forms of improving their lives and those of their families. The BeStrong29 Foundation will be offering scholarships to both Physical and Occupational students wishing to specialize but not limited to people with spinal cord injuries and disabilities. The BeStrong29 Foundation will also make donations on behalf of the Foundation to help find a cure for paralysis and improve the quality of life for those living with paralysis.

Your participation in this adult 3 on 3 event will help support the mission on the BeStrong29 Foundation. Please join us in helping the Deaver Family give back and provide the resources to others just as they received when Mick was injuried.
